In 2016 whilst riding on the 5:00 am train from the Gold Coast of Australia to the Brisbane airport, I openly wept. I had just watched the harrowing documentary, Sky Jumpers, a movie about one of the most famous skydiving teams in the world – The PD Factory Team. The movie followed the team on their incredible adventures, but also took an unexpected turn with the death of one of the sport’s beloved humans, Jonathan Tagle and the near death of a respected friend, Shannon Pilcher. Seeing Shannon on the brink of death in the hospital was hard to fathom and I couldn’t help but feel emotional as the story I had heard about played out on the screen in front of me.
Shannon has been in the top ranks (a world champion) of skydiving for over 20 years and is one of the sport’s most respected figures. I had met Shannon at an event and he’s someone I’ve always wanted to get to know because of how he has carried himself – funny, intelligent, personable, high integrity, and hard-working.
In 2017, Shannon Pilcher called me to talk about a project he’d been thinking about for over a year. Having lived an extraordinary life filled with triumphs and incredible hardships, he felt it was time to share much of what he’d learned in order to help others. He had visualized a website where he could house his thoughts with a blog as well as a podcast to interview people he respected and who were living extraordinary lives. He wanted our help to make his vision a reality and he called us.
As a marketing agency, our greatest joy comes from working with great clients. That may sound cliché, but we often wonder if we’d enjoy our work as much if we were working with marketing teams at major corporations devoid of passion. We are passionate people and we want to work with those who are passionate about their products and services. We want to develop relationships so that when a project comes to completion, the victory is shared.
Our challenge with Shannon was to get a feeling across about who Shannon is as Shannon’s brand is gentle, but confident with a touch of wisdom from a unique life experience. To showcase this, we wanted to mix beautiful photography with a clean and modern design without frills. With Shannon, less is more and we wanted his photography and writing to be showcased without any distraction.
Shannon’s site launched on November 1st, 2018 and we couldn’t be more proud of this website because it was deeply personal to us. We wanted Shannon to love what we had built, and were willing to do anything to ensure he was happy at every stage. Most of all, we’re also proud to call Shannon Pilcher a friend, and that has been the greatest honor of all.
“I needed a website. More than that, I needed a hub for all of my then-unrealized, online business ventures. James, Melissa and their team at Beyond Marketing were able to listen beyond my words and make sense out of my feelings and my vision. Over the course of a year, despite my roller-coaster lifestyle and its erratic schedule, Beyond Marketing gracefully and patiently worked with me to produce a website that makes me proud.
To me, Beyond Marketing differentiates itself from its competitors in three notable ways: a) It listens for understanding, holding its customers accountable to their inner voices, resulting in a product that goes far beyond the expected results, b) It honors the business arrangement with a level of commitment and devotion that cannot be bought, and c) It helps its customers conceive of and prepare for the launch of their new site, service or campaign by using its vast experience and knowledge to open doors that otherwise would have remained closed.
If you ever find yourself considering how you might grow your brand or visibility, look no further than Beyond Marketing. It has the ears, eyes, heart and mind to help you promote your true self, so that you can feel good about the value you can bring to the world.”
